Oman is poised to take a significant leap forward in renewable energy with the upcoming launch of the “Imtidad” Community Solar Power Stations Programme. This initiative, spearheaded by the Public Services Regulation Authority (PSRA) in collaboration with licensed electricity providers, is designed to broaden public involvement in sustainable energy practices. By participating in this program, both residents and businesses can harness the benefits of solar energy without the need to install solar panels on their premises.
Participants in the Imtidad programme will receive credits on their electricity bills from solar power generated by community stations linked to the national grid. This approach is intended to lower energy expenses, promote the adoption of clean energy, and support Oman’s shift towards a more sustainable energy future. A significant event in this endeavor is the opening of the Wadi Al Kabir Community Solar Power Station, which marks the first project under Imtidad and Oman’s inaugural community-driven solar facility. The plan is to progressively introduce similar projects throughout the nation.
Authorities emphasize that this initiative will yield economic, social, and environmental advantages by fostering investment in renewable energy, aiding local businesses, generating employment opportunities, and enhancing energy efficiency. Additionally, the programme is in line with Oman’s comprehensive strategy to diversify its energy resources, bolster sustainability efforts, and achieve the objectives outlined in Oman Vision 2040.
Community solar projects under Imtidad are expected to make renewable energy more accessible, particularly for households and businesses lacking the space or resources for individual solar setups. By facilitating broader access to clean energy, these projects contribute to the national targets for clean energy adoption.
