Sharjah has unveiled a logistics corridor that bridges the emirate with Oman, cutting cargo transit times drastically from nearly three months to a mere 35 days. This strategic initiative aims at enhancing supply chain efficiency, reducing transportation expenses, and fortifying trade connections between the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and broader regional economies. The corridor links Sharjah with Oman’s prime ports, including Sohar, Duqm, and Salalah, facilitated through the Khatmat Malaha and Al Madam border crossings. As the operations mature, authorities anticipate further reductions in transit times.
To promote the corridor’s use, Sharjah has introduced toll exemptions for cargo trucks utilizing the designated routes from Oman. This package also features expedited customs clearance, streamlined cargo movement, and allows businesses to conduct customs procedures at inland container terminals rather than at the border crossings. Such measures are expected to slash logistics costs by approximately 15%, contingent on the type of cargo and specific transportation needs. The corridor is particularly advantageous for manufacturers, as it accelerates the transport of raw materials and finished goods.
Sharjah’s strategy to cement its role as a pivotal regional logistics and manufacturing hub is underpinned by this project. With over 3,000 factories contributing about a quarter of the emirate’s GDP, the enhanced trade route is poised to boost exports and lure international investors eager to access markets in Africa, India, and Asia. The operational corridor, which opened on May 14, supports cargo movement in both directions and is bolstered by synchronized customs procedures, real-time data exchange, and special lanes for fast-track shipments.
