The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated inspections for Boeing 737 Max aircraft to check for potential cracks in a key structural part of the fuselage. This order impacts approximately 471 planes, with inspections set to commence in September. The focal point of these checks is the bear strap, a structural element that reinforces the area around the aircraft’s exit doors. Similar issues with cracking have already been identified in older models of Boeing’s 737 Next Generation series, which led to similar precautionary measures for those aircraft.
While no cracks have been detected in the 737 Max fleet so far, the FAA notes that the aircraft’s design and manufacturing process shares features with the older models, suggesting a possibility for the same structural issues to arise. The agency has cautioned that any undetected cracks might compromise the integrity of this crucial component and potentially undermine the overall structural safety of the aircraft.
Boeing has acknowledged the situation, stating that it has been collaborating with airlines since the problem was recognized in 2019. The company supports the FAA’s directive for mandatory inspections, emphasizing that these checks are intended to spot and address any issues before they can develop into significant concerns.
