During a ministerial gathering in Manila, Philippines, marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), Oman reiterated its dedication to maintaining maritime security and ensuring the freedom of navigation. Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi underscored the significance of international law, mutual respect, and peaceful collaboration as crucial elements for preserving both regional and global stability. He highlighted the importance of dialogue and diplomacy as tools for resolving conflicts and fostering trust among nations.
The minister emphasized the necessity of keeping key international waterways, such as the Strait of Hormuz, open and secure to facilitate global navigation and trade. He pointed to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the cornerstone for safeguarding maritime security and ensuring the protection of global trade, as well as food and energy supplies. Al Busaidi’s remarks underline Oman’s commitment to upholding the principles that govern the seas and oceans.
Oman also called for enhanced cooperation among coastal nations and users of international shipping corridors, citing the Strait of Malacca and Singapore as exemplary models of successful collaborative maritime security efforts. By spotlighting these regions, Oman underscores the potential benefits of joint initiatives in bolstering the safety and security of vital shipping lanes that underpin global commerce.
Furthermore, Oman reaffirmed its intention to strengthen maritime partnerships with ASEAN member states.
