As Israel’s parliamentary elections approach, former US President Donald Trump has publicly renewed his endorsement of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This endorsement comes at a critical time for Netanyahu, who is seeking to maintain his position amid growing challenges and public scrutiny over recent security issues.
In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump lauded Netanyahu as an “outstanding Warrior Prime Minister,” emphasizing their collaborative efforts during military operations against Iran. Trump claimed that joint actions by the US and Israel had significantly weakened Iran’s military power and economic stability. He also referenced the US naval blockade that has impacted Iran’s oil exports, urging Israeli voters to support Netanyahu for continued cooperation on shared security goals.
Netanyahu’s response was to acknowledge Trump’s support by sharing the endorsement on social media. Despite reports suggesting that Netanyahu sought Trump’s backing as the elections neared, a spokesperson for his Likud party denied any such request was made by the prime minister.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s main opponent, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, responded to Trump’s endorsement by asserting that the decision of leadership should rest solely with the Israeli people. While expressing respect for Trump, Eisenkot emphasized the importance of Israel’s democratic process in selecting its leader.
The upcoming election poses a significant challenge for Netanyahu, who is facing criticism over security lapses, particularly the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. The resulting conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran have further influenced the political discourse in Israel. Current opinion polls indicate that Netanyahu’s governing coalition may struggle to retain power, highlighting the election’s importance for the country’s political landscape.
