Bahrain and France have agreed to deepen their strategic partnership following official talks between Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and French President Emmanuel Macron. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation across several key areas, including defence, investment, energy, technology, and sustainable development. This meeting underscores the longstanding relations between the two countries and their mutual interest in bolstering economic and security ties.
The leaders explored opportunities to enhance their strategic partnership, taking into account both regional and international developments. A significant defense cooperation agreement, previously signed during King Hamad’s visit to France in February, was highlighted as a framework for future collaboration in areas such as security, energy, technology, trade, and cultural exchanges. Both leaders expressed a commitment to strengthening defense and security cooperation, essential for protecting national interests and promoting regional stability.
King Hamad condemned recent attacks by Houthi forces against Saudi Arabia, emphasizing Bahrain’s solidarity with its neighbor in ensuring security and territorial integrity. He praised France’s contributions to maritime security and regional stability. The monarch reiterated the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue and respect for national sovereignty and international law, particularly in the context of the Middle East and the Palestinian issue. Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to supporting Bahrain in these efforts and suggested expanding industrial cooperation, notably with Aluminium Bahrain (Alba).
Energy security was a pivotal topic during the talks, with both countries seeking reliable energy supplies and closer collaboration to address regional challenges. The meeting culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. This agreement aims to develop Bahrain’s civilian nuclear energy capabilities through specialized training and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
Additionally, the discussions touched on joint projects in energy, industry, and transportation, including the potential for railway connectivity linking Bahrain with other Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Such initiatives are seen as vital for regional integration and economic growth.
In recognition of President Macron’s efforts to strengthen ties between Bahrain and France, King Hamad awarded him the Collar of the Order of Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Exceptional Class. The visit reinforced the commitment of both nations to expand their strategic partnership and cooperation across various sectors.
