Oil Prices Surge as Tanker Incident Disrupts Strait of Hormuz Traffic

Must read

An oil tanker named EL GAIA caught fire after hitting naval mines while trying to navigate through the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The tanker was reportedly using a route deemed off-limits by Iranian authorities when the incident took place. Despite efforts to douse the flames, the blaze could not be controlled, as per reports from Iranian officials.

The IRGC Navy highlighted that prior warnings had been issued concerning the risks associated with traversing the restricted path in this critical maritime corridor. They reiterated their stance that the Strait of Hormuz is currently closed and under the strict supervision of Iranian naval forces. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority further cautioned insurance companies, protection and indemnity insurers, and classification societies against offering services to any vessels that violate these shipping restrictions.

The Strait of Hormuz is a pivotal route for the world’s energy supply, facilitating a major portion of global oil and gas transportation. Any limitations on vessel movement through this channel have sparked fears of heightened disruptions in international energy markets. The recent incident involving the tanker underscores the ongoing tensions in the region and their potential impact on global energy trade.

Iran’s tightening of control over the strait follows US-Israeli military actions in Iran on February 28. In response to these developments, US forces have implemented a naval blockade aimed at curtailing the movement of ships to and from Iranian ports. These measures have further complicated the already fragile situation in the strait, a crucial chokepoint for energy and trade.
