WhatsApp is set to transform the way users interact on its platform with the introduction of a new privacy feature that allows communication via usernames instead of phone numbers. This significant update is being phased in gradually, with users able to reserve their unique usernames as part of a global rollout planned for later this year. Once fully implemented, users can initiate chats using just a username, eliminating the need to disclose their mobile numbers.
The new username system permits users to create a distinctive handle within the app. To message someone, only the username is required, and the phone number remains hidden. In cases where a desired username is already in use, WhatsApp provides alternative suggestions through an in-app generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory of usernames, ensuring that only individuals who know the exact username can reach out, thus enhancing privacy.
To reserve a username, WhatsApp users can update their app and navigate to the following path: Settings → Account → Username. Users will be alerted when the feature becomes available in their specific region. Due to the app’s vast user base, early reservations are being encouraged to secure popular handles, as competition is expected to be fierce.
In addition to the basic privacy features, the system offers an optional “username key” for added security. This key serves as an additional protective layer, enabling users to decide who is permitted to initiate conversations with them. This setup is particularly beneficial for personal users, creators, businesses, and public accounts, allowing them to synchronize their WhatsApp identity with existing social media handles, such as those on Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp has clarified that the use of usernames is entirely optional. Users who prefer the traditional method of communication via phone numbers can continue to do so without any changes. Notifications regarding the feature’s availability will be sent through the app as it becomes accessible in various regions. This innovative feature aims to enhance user privacy while providing flexibility in managing how they connect with others on the platform.
