Renowned Canadian voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers saga and Eeyore from the Winnie the Pooh series, passed away at 85. Cullen died on Wednesday, surrounded by his family, at his residence in Los Angeles, as confirmed by a statement from his family.
Born in Montreal, Cullen’s career commenced in Canadian television and radio, eventually establishing him as a legendary figure in voice acting. He first brought life to the character of Optimus Prime in the 1984 Transformers animated series. His portrayal of the courageous leader continued through seven major Hollywood films from 2007 to 2023, as well as various spin-offs. Additionally, Cullen’s endearing performance as Eeyore began with The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and extended across numerous television adaptations, movies, and video games.
In addition to these beloved characters, Cullen’s diverse voice work included the role of KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT, in the television series Knight Rider. He also created the memorable clicking sounds of the extraterrestrial creature in the 1987 sci-fi film Predator and provided the voice for King Kong in the 1976 film remake.
Cullen often credited his older brother Larry, a former captain in the US Marine Corps, for influencing the portrayal of Optimus Prime’s noble character. His brother’s advice was to depict the leader as a figure of strength and integrity, without resorting to aggression. This guidance helped shape the character’s lasting appeal.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Cullen received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011 for his work as Optimus Prime. Later, in 2023, he was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards. Over the decades, Cullen’s performances left an indelible mark on the world of animation and science fiction, ensuring his legacy in popular culture.
