Tensions between Iran and the United States have prompted calls for renewed diplomacy from international players, with China stepping up as a mediator to ease the conflict’s global repercussions. In a high-level meeting in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the critical need for Tehran and Washington to exercise restraint and return to the negotiating table.
The ongoing conflict, according to Wang, undermines not only the interests of the involved nations but also the stability of the international community. He urged both countries to adhere to their existing memorandum of understanding, proposing that they use it as a foundation for resuming talks. By doing so, Wang believes they can rebuild trust and work towards a sustainable resolution.
The strategic Strait of Hormuz, a pivotal route for global energy supplies, also featured prominently in the discussions. Wang stressed the importance of keeping this waterway open and secure to safeguard international shipping routes and maintain the integrity of global supply chains. He also encouraged regional parties to prevent the escalation of tensions into Yemen and the Red Sea, advocating for dialogue as the primary means of resolving disputes.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi echoed a willingness to re-engage in diplomatic efforts, asserting that Iran does not wish for the conflict to persist. Tehran is open to working alongside regional nations to improve relations and security, considering the current memorandum with the United States as still valid. Araghchi expressed Iran’s readiness to cooperate further with China, welcoming Beijing’s proposals aimed at enhancing peace and stability in the Middle East.
