A GI Doc’s “Must-Eat” List: 7 Foods for Liver Vitality

A gastroenterologist specializing in nutrition has shared a “must-eat” list of seven foods to boost liver vitality. These fruits and vegetables are packed with compounds that support the liver’s role in detoxification and metabolism.

A key recommendation is the combination of apples and cinnamon. According to the specialist, apples provide soluble pectin fiber and polyphenols. Cinnamon contains compounds that have been studied for their role in supporting insulin sensitivity and healthier lipid levels.

Another “must-eat” is beetroot. The doctor explains that beetroots are loaded with nitrates (for blood flow) and a nutrient called betaine. Betaine is specifically noted for its ability to help the liver process and move fat out of its cells.

The list also champions berries. Cranberries are essential for the gut-liver axis, thanks to their prebiotic polyphenols. Raspberries are highlighted for their high fiber and anthocyanin content, which helps regulate blood sugar and improve fat processing.

Pomegranates are on the list for their anti-inflammatory properties. Watermelon with lime is recommended for boosting blood flow. Lastly, strawberries with dark chocolate (70% cocoa) are suggested for their flavanol content, which supports cardiometabolic health.
